When the Mono Basin gets cold enough in winter, and the wind is still, the volcanically warmed lake's evaporation often freezes into layers of ice fog, called pogonip. Here, the fog forms a layer above the lake, which has cleared in the direction of Black Point near sunset, creating this colorful winter scene.
