Autumn in the Southwest
The strange forms and amazing colors of the American Southwest are joined each year by wonderful (if not dense) displays of fall color. -
Petrified Wood Abstracts
Looking deep inside the log-turned-stone, we find strange patterns... During my 2008 artist residency in Petrified Forest National Park I was captivated by the colors and forms found within petrified logs. One result of that fascination was this series of fourteen images, which I printed on metal, arranging to make only one print ever of each of these 14 designs. It took a while to find a process that really captures the translucency of real petrified wood, but I believe these singular prints do nature justice. -
Painted Hills, Electric Sky
Moonsoon-season thunderstorms complement the colorful clay badlands and mesas of Petrified Forest National Park. In 2008 I was granted an artist residency at Petrified Forest by the National Park Service, allowing me weeks nearly unfettered access to the park even when it was (as it is every evening) closed. It was an incredible experience, and I am thankful to the NPS and the people who work there for their kind assistance and for the opportunity to work there. -
Desert Rhythms
Winds and sands meet in the desert to practice their music, sometimes repetitive, sometimes chaotic, always beautiful.
Each image in this series is limited to a maximum of ten photographic prints. -
Saga: Visions of the Iceland
It is impossible to explore the primal landscape of Iceland without being taken by the sense of age, power and history one finds in the tradition of the Icelandic sögur (in English, sagas). -
Above the Arctic Circle
Arctic landscapes—places such as Greenland and Svalbard—are far more full of life, color and beauty than most imagine. -
Signatures of the Sun
The white "signatures" in these photographs are real; they are not manipulations or paintings. They are patterns sketched by sunlight skipping along the surface of turbulent streams.
Pieces from this body of work (some not shown) were the basis for the collaboration with pianist Jen Bratz, composer Sam Hamm and myself of the same title. -
Mono in Winter
Just east of the Sierra crest, the Mono Lake and its surrounding basin transforms in winter, from not only the occasional snows but also the mysteriously-layered ice fogs, called pogonip, that sometimes cover the lake. -
Classics and Favorites
Some of my the more popular images from my older bodies of work. -
